Programme Synopsis
The Polish community is now the 2nd biggest ethnic group in Northern Ireland. Migrant workers come with raised expectations for their futures, but are we only a short-term financial fix or do many see Northern Ireland as a society in which they wish to settle and raise their families?
80 - 90% of well-educated Poles initially arrive to do jobs far below their abilities and qualifications. Work! Work! Work! will follow the personal journeys of migrant workers and their families and explore whether the current global recession is affecting the nature of migrant worker employment. The programmes will also examine wider issues around migration from the challenges of language, culture and integration as well as racism and exploitation.
Despite our sectarian history, are we a society moving forward and reaping the cultural rewards of engaging with "new communities" or are we still locked in a fear based on "difference".
Gerry Anderson and Natalia Szymanska
